Tarangire Sopa Lodge is set in the heart of Tarangire National Park, about two and a half hours’ drive from Arusha. Staying inside the park makes a real difference: there is no long drive to the gate each morning, and you can be out among the elephants and baobabs at first light and back in the late afternoon with time to spare before dinner.
Tarangire is famous for its elephants — in the dry season, herds of hundreds gather along the Tarangire River — and for its giant baobab trees, which give the landscape its unmistakable look. The lodge is well placed for game drives in every direction, so your guide can follow the best sightings of the day.
The lodge’s suites are among the most spacious in the park. Each has a private lounge with a minibar, a bedroom with two queen-size beds and room for a third, an en-suite bathroom, and a verandah overlooking the baobab-dotted landscape. Rooms have air conditioning and a hair dryer — comforts that are not always available in the bush.
Between drives, the swimming pool is the place to be. It sits on the edge of a rocky gorge, with its own bar and snack kitchen, and is a welcome escape from the heat of the dry season. In the evening, meals are served in the restaurant or around the rooftop barbecue area.
With its size, family-friendly service — children are welcome, and special meals and babysitters can be arranged — and its location inside the park, Sopa is a practical, comfortable choice for families, groups travelling together and anyone who wants maximum time with Tarangire’s wildlife.
