When to go

Tanzania, month by month

There’s no bad time to visit — only different experiences. Choose a month to see what’s happening.

  • Dry season
  • Green season
  • Short rains
  • Long rains
January

Calving season begins

The migration herds gather on the short-grass plains of the southern Serengeti and Ndutu. A drier spell makes it a good month for Kilimanjaro, and Zanzibar is hot and sunny.

Best for
  • Ndutu & southern Serengeti
  • Kilimanjaro
  • Zanzibar
February

Peak calving & predators

Thousands of wildebeest calves are born each day, drawing lions, cheetahs and hyenas. One of the most dramatic months for a safari.

Best for
  • Great Migration
  • Ndutu
  • Ngorongoro
March

Green season starts

The herds are still in the south. Long rains usually arrive towards the end of the month — landscapes turn green and lodges are quieter.

Best for
  • Southern Serengeti
  • Tarangire
  • Lake Manyara
April

The long rains

The wettest month, with lush scenery, few vehicles and the best rates. Some remote camps close; the Ngorongoro Crater remains rewarding.

Best for
  • Ngorongoro
  • Arusha National Park
  • value travel
May

Rains ease, herds move

Rain tapers off and the migration begins moving north-west through the central Serengeti. Green landscapes and quieter parks.

Best for
  • Central Serengeti
  • Ngorongoro
June

Dry season begins

Cooler, dry weather returns. The herds gather in the Western Corridor and the main Kilimanjaro climbing season begins.

Best for
  • Western Corridor
  • Kilimanjaro
  • Tarangire
July

River crossings begin

The migration reaches the northern Serengeti and the Mara River crossings start. Peak season for safaris, Kilimanjaro and Zanzibar.

Best for
  • Northern Serengeti
  • Kilimanjaro
  • Zanzibar
August

Peak of the crossings

The most dramatic Mara River crossings, clear dry skies and excellent game viewing across every park.

Best for
  • Northern Serengeti
  • Tarangire
  • Ngorongoro
September

Dry-season highlights

Crossings continue in the north, and Tarangire’s elephant herds are at their largest around the river.

Best for
  • Northern Serengeti
  • Tarangire
  • Kilimanjaro
October

Quieter dry season

Still dry with excellent wildlife. Towards the end of the month the herds begin drifting south. A fine month for Kilimanjaro.

Best for
  • Northern Serengeti
  • Kilimanjaro
  • Lake Natron
November

Short rains & the return south

Brief afternoon showers refresh the plains as the herds move back towards the southern Serengeti. Fewer visitors and good rates.

Best for
  • Central Serengeti
  • Lake Manyara
  • value travel
December

Festive season

The herds return to the southern plains, the bush is green and Zanzibar enters its hot, dry season — ideal for a bush-and-beach holiday.

Best for
  • Southern Serengeti
  • Zanzibar
  • family travel

Planning questions

When is the best time for a Tanzania safari?

The dry season from June to October offers the easiest game viewing and the Mara River crossings in the northern Serengeti. January to March is calving season in the south. The green seasons (November and March to May) are quieter, lush and better value.

How many days do I need for a safari?

Three to four days covers Tarangire, Lake Manyara and the Ngorongoro Crater. Allow five to seven days to include the Serengeti properly, and add four or more days if you’d like to finish on Zanzibar.

Can I combine a safari with Zanzibar or Kilimanjaro?

Yes. Short flights connect the northern parks with Zanzibar, so a safari followed by a beach stay is easy. Many climbers also add a safari after summiting Kilimanjaro.

Which Kilimanjaro route should I choose?

Machame and Lemosho are popular for their scenery and acclimatisation; Marangu is the only route with huts; Rongai is quieter and drier; the Northern Circuit is the longest and most gradual. Longer itineraries generally give you a better chance of reaching the summit.

Are your safaris private?

We offer both private safaris, with your own vehicle and guide, and group joining departures for travellers who prefer to share. Every private itinerary can be tailored.

Do I need a visa to visit Tanzania?

Most visitors need a visa, which can usually be applied for online through Tanzania’s official eVisa portal before travel. Requirements vary by nationality and can change, so please check the latest rules for your passport — see our visa and health guide for details.
