Overview

About Lake Manyara Kilimamoja Lodge

Lake Manyara Kilimamoja Lodge stands on the rim of the Great Rift Valley above Mto wa Mbu, just outside Lake Manyara National Park. The views are the reason to come: across the lake and the valley floor, over the green canopy of the park’s groundwater forest, and on clear days as far as Mount Meru and Kilimanjaro on the horizon.

The lodge has forty-eight deluxe rooms and a two-bedroom luxury villa. Every room has a private veranda and viewing deck facing the valley, and bathrooms with a sleeper bath, indoor and outdoor showers and double basins. Rooms are equipped with a minibar, a safe and Wi-Fi, and suit double, twin or triple occupancy.

The public areas are designed around the view. An infinity pool seems to spill over the escarpment edge, a spa and gym look out over the valley, and a lounge with an outdoor fireplace becomes the gathering place in the evening for stories and stargazing. Butler service adds a personal touch throughout your stay.

The lodge is very well placed for the northern circuit: about 25 minutes from the Lake Manyara gate, just over an hour from the Lodoare gate of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and under an hour and a half from Tarangire. That makes it an ideal stop between Tarangire and the crater, or a base for two nights with day trips.

Families are well catered for, with a children’s activity room and family activities, and the villa gives extra space and privacy. The lodge is non-smoking, and the final road up the escarpment is unpaved and can be rough in the rains.

Location

Location & getting there

The lodge is on the escarpment at Mto wa Mbu, about 20 minutes from Lake Manyara airstrip and around 2 hours 40 minutes by road from Arusha. Lake Manyara’s gate is about 25 minutes away, Karatu about 55 minutes, the Ngorongoro (Lodoare) gate about 1 hour 10 minutes and Tarangire’s gate about 1 hour 25 minutes.

The final road up to the lodge is unpaved and can be rough in the rains, but it is easily managed in a safari vehicle. We plan your route so you arrive in time to enjoy the view — ideally with a sundowner by the infinity pool.

When to go

Best time to stay

The lodge is open all year. Views are clearest in the dry season, from June to October, when Mount Meru and Kilimanjaro are more often visible on the horizon and game viewing in Tarangire and the crater is at its best.

The green season, from November to May, brings lush scenery across the valley, migrant birds and dramatic skies, and Lake Manyara often fills, drawing flamingos and pelicans. Rain usually falls in the afternoon, and the unpaved access road can be rough in the wettest months.
