The Manor at Ngorongoro is set on the Shangri-La coffee estate in the Karatu highlands, bordering the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and about an hour’s drive from the crater. It feels like a grand country house transported to East Africa: whitewashed buildings, manicured lawns, rows of coffee bushes and the forested slopes of the conservation area beyond.
The accommodation is spread across nine cottages, each divided into two suites — eighteen in all. Every suite has an indoor fireplace, a sitting area, a private deck with an outdoor fire pit and its own courtyard. For families and groups, the separate Stable Cottage has three en-suite bedrooms, a large family lounge and a TV room.
What sets The Manor apart is that the estate is a destination in its own right. Horse riding and cycling trails run through the coffee and along the forest edge, guided walks explore the estate, and the main house holds a spa with sauna and steam room, a swimming pool, a library, a snooker room, a private cinema and a wine cellar. It is easy to spend a whole afternoon here without wishing you were anywhere else.
Most guests use The Manor as their base for the Ngorongoro Crater, descending early in the morning with a picnic and returning to a fire in their suite. It also works well for excursions to Olduvai Gorge and Lake Manyara, and as a restful pause between the parks on a longer safari.
Children are welcome, babysitting can be arranged, and room service, laundry and Wi-Fi are available.
