Meet the towns behind the safaris and the mountain — colourful markets, fresh coffee, local food and the rhythm of everyday Tanzanian life.
Most travellers pass through Arusha or Moshi on the way to a safari or a climb, but both towns reward a few hours of exploring with a local host. Arusha, Tanzania’s safari capital at the foot of Mount Meru, is busy and cosmopolitan; Moshi, at the foot of Kilimanjaro, is smaller, greener and more relaxed. Each has its own character, and a guided walk is the easiest way to discover it.
In Arusha, a typical experience includes the Central Market, with its piles of tropical fruit, spices and fabrics; the Maasai market for crafts; the clock tower, said to mark a midpoint between Cairo and Cape Town; and, if you wish, the Cultural Heritage Centre, with its art gallery and gemstone displays, including tanzanite. In Moshi, you can explore the main market and the old town, visit a coffee house serving Kilimanjaro-grown coffee, taste street food such as mishkaki skewers and chips mayai, and enjoy views of Kibo on clear mornings.
These walks are flexible and easy-paced, ideal for an arrival or departure day, a rest day after a climb, or travellers who simply want to understand modern Tanzania. Your host adapts the route to your interests — food, crafts, history or photography — and can help you shop and bargain fairly.
