The experience

Maasai Village Cultural Experience

The Maasai are semi-nomadic pastoralists whose lives revolve around their cattle, and whose red shúkà cloths and beadwork are known around the world. Many Maasai communities live on the plains around Arusha and along the route to Tarangire and Ngorongoro, and this experience takes you to one of them for an unhurried visit, arranged with the community and guided by one of its members.

You are welcomed at the boma — a circle of homesteads protected by a thorn fence — often with a traditional song and the famous jumping dance. Your host shows you inside a traditional house built of wood, mud and dung, and explains family life, the roles of men and women, the importance of cattle and the passage from boyhood to warriorhood. Depending on the day, you may watch herding, learn how fire is made with sticks, visit a small community school and see the women’s beadwork, which you can buy directly from the makers.

The experience is intended to be respectful and two-way: ask questions, share something about your own life, and always ask before taking photographs of people. Fees go to the community, and we keep groups small. The visit can be a half-day trip from Arusha or a stop on the way to a safari park.
