Look down into a hidden crater lake of deep turquoise, then explore the waterfalls and underground tunnels of the Chagga people in Marangu.
Lake Chala is a deep crater lake in a volcanic caldera on the Tanzania–Kenya border, at the eastern edge of Kilimanjaro, about one and a half to two hours’ drive from Moshi. Steep forested walls enclose its strikingly blue-green water, and the walk down from the rim reveals a peaceful, almost hidden world where baboons, monkeys and many birds live along the crater edge. A picnic lunch by the lake and, when available, a gentle canoe outing make this a relaxed and memorable day.
On the way back, the route passes through Marangu, one of the best-known Chagga villages on Kilimanjaro’s slopes. Here you can visit a waterfall such as Ndoro or Kinukamori, walk through banana and coffee farms, and explore the Chagga caves — tunnels dug by hand generations ago as shelters during clan conflicts. A local guide brings the history to life and explains Chagga traditions, farming and life on the mountain.
The day combines scenery, gentle walking and culture, and suits most travellers. The paths into the crater and the caves are steep and uneven in places, and the tunnels are narrow and low. Canoeing at Lake Chala depends on the current facilities and safety conditions, which we confirm before your trip; swimming is not recommended.

Chemka (Kikuletwa), south of Moshi
Swim in the clear, warm, spring-fed pools of Chemka (Kikuletwa), an oasis of fig trees and turquoise water in the dry plains south of Moshi.
We don’t recommend it. The lake is very deep, and wildlife lives along its shores. Canoeing with life jackets is the safer way to enjoy the water.
Lake Chala lies on the border, but this trip stays on the Tanzanian side. Bring a copy of your passport, as checkpoints are possible.
