Tour overview

6-Day Marangu Route Kilimanjaro Climb

Experience the beauty and challenge of Kilimanjaro on this six-day climb through the varied landscapes of Kilimanjaro National Park. Rising to 5,895 m, the mountain is one of the world’s great natural landmarks. The Marangu or “Coca-Cola” Route is among its oldest and best-established trails, climbing the south-eastern slopes through rainforest, heathland, moorland and alpine desert — and, unlike every other major route, it uses permanent mountain huts rather than tents.

This itinerary adds an acclimatization day at Horombo Hut, making it a more gradual alternative to the five-day climb. From Marangu Gate the trail rises through rainforest to Mandara Hut, then across moorland to Horombo (about 3,720 m), with fine views of Mawenzi and Kibo. The extra day is spent walking up towards Zebra Rocks before returning to sleep at Horombo. You then cross the alpine desert to Kibo Hut for the summit night: Gilman’s Point on the crater rim and, conditions permitting, Uhuru Peak.

The six-day Marangu climb suits well-prepared travellers who want a serious challenge with the practical advantages of hut accommodation. No technical skills are needed in normal conditions, but the summit demands endurance, determination, good equipment and care at altitude. The extra day gives more time to adjust, though altitude illness is still possible and the summit can never be guaranteed. Your guides and crew provide navigation, meals, logistics and regular health checks throughout.

Into the Tropical Rainforest

Your climb begins with a morning transfer from Moshi or Arusha to Marangu Gate on Kilimanjaro’s south-eastern slopes, past villages and banana farms. At the gate your Genet Expeditions guide completes park registration, permit checks and final equipment checks, and you meet your assistant guides, cook and porters before setting off into the montane rainforest.

The trail climbs steadily through tall trees, moss-hung branches and dense vegetation, where forest birds and monkeys are sometimes seen. Your guide sets an easy pace with regular drinks and rests, and keeps a careful eye on how you feel. After four to six hours, reach Mandara Hut (about 2,720 m), settle into your hut and enjoy a warm dinner on your first night on the mountain.

Ascending into the Moorland

After breakfast the trail climbs out of the rainforest into heathland and open moorland, where the vegetation shortens and the views widen. On clear days you begin to see Mawenzi, Kilimanjaro’s jagged eastern peak, and the broad volcanic dome of Kibo, which holds Uhuru Peak. Your guide keeps a steady pace with regular drinks and rests.

The walk takes five to seven hours, past giant groundsels and other high-altitude plants. Reach Horombo Hut (about 3,720 m), settle in and enjoy a warm meal. Your guide carries out routine health checks and briefs you on tomorrow’s acclimatization walk.

Acclimatization Day: Explore Zebra Rocks

Today is for acclimatization. After breakfast, join your guide on a slow walk from Horombo Hut towards Zebra Rocks, at about 4,000 m — striking volcanic formations streaked with light and dark mineral bands. Climbing higher during the day and returning to sleep lower is one of the best ways to help your body adjust before the push to Kibo.

The walk takes three to five hours, and your guide may shorten or lengthen it to suit the group. Return to Horombo for lunch and an afternoon of rest and hydration. The extra day gives your body more time to adapt, although it cannot remove the risk of altitude illness. After health checks and a briefing on tomorrow’s route to Kibo, enjoy dinner and a second night at Horombo.

Journey Across the Alpine Desert

After an early breakfast, leave the moorland behind and enter Kilimanjaro’s alpine desert — a vast, open expanse of rock, gravel and volcanic formations. The trail crosses the broad Saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo, with dramatic views of both peaks in clear weather. The air is noticeably thinner now, so a slow, steady pace matters more than ever.

Reach Kibo Hut (about 4,700 m) after five to seven hours. After a warm meal, your guide gives a full briefing on the night’s departure, clothing, weather and safety, and assesses whether each climber is fit to continue. The rest of the day is for resting, drinking and preparing your summit kit before an early night.

Summit Attempt and Descent to Horombo

Your summit attempt usually starts around midnight after a short rest at Kibo Hut. After a light snack, climb steeply by headlamp through loose volcanic scree — cold, dark and at extreme altitude, this is the hardest stage of the climb. Your guide sets a slow, controlled pace and checks each climber regularly. The first goal is Gilman’s Point on the crater rim (about 5,685 m). If the weather, the trail and your health allow, continue along the rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m), the highest point in Africa, with views over the crater and the remaining ice fields. Reaching the summit is never guaranteed, and your guide’s safety decisions always come first.

From your highest safe point, descend carefully to Kibo Hut for a rest and a meal, then continue down through the alpine desert to Horombo Hut (about 3,720 m) as the air thickens and the vegetation returns. With the ascent and descent combined, this is an exceptionally long day of twelve to sixteen hours or more. Arrive for a warm dinner and a well-earned night’s rest after one of the most memorable days of your life.

Final Descent and Farewell

After breakfast, descend through the moorland and heathland, past Mandara Hut and back into the lush rainforest. The walking is easier on the lungs, but the long downhill stretch can be tiring after summit day, so your guide keeps a comfortable pace with time for rests, photographs and a last look at the mountain.

Reach Marangu Gate after five to seven hours, where your guide completes the park exit formalities and eligible climbers receive their summit certificate for the highest official point reached. Say farewell to your mountain crew and transfer back to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha to celebrate the end of your six-day Marangu Route climb with Genet Expeditions.

Important travel information

Who this climb suits
Well-prepared first-time high-altitude trekkers and experienced hikers who prefer huts to tents. The climb is still demanding — training, good equipment and awareness of altitude risks are essential.
Altitude & safety
The extra day at Horombo lets you walk higher and sleep lower before the summit push, which supports acclimatization — though it cannot remove the risk of altitude illness. Your guide checks everyone regularly for headache, nausea, dizziness, unusual tiredness and breathlessness; worsening symptoms mean descent, not a summit. Speak to a doctor before booking if you have medical concerns, and carry insurance that covers high-altitude trekking and evacuation.
Best time to climb
January to early March and June to October are usually drier. April–May and parts of November bring more rain, muddy trails and less visibility. Mountain weather is unpredictable all year — prepare for rain, wind and freezing summit temperatures.
Where you sleep
Marangu is the only Kilimanjaro route with permanent huts. Sleeping is shared, with basic communal facilities — electricity, showers, private bathrooms and hotel-style service should not be expected. Bring a cold-rated sleeping bag. Every comfort level uses the same huts, subject to official allocation.
What to pack
Broken-in waterproof boots; base and insulating layers; a waterproof, windproof jacket and trousers; a warm summit jacket; gloves, hat and neck warmer; sun hat, sunglasses and high-SPF sunscreen; a daypack and water bottles; a cold-rated sleeping bag; a headlamp with spare batteries; trekking poles; toiletries, medication and a small first-aid kit; snacks; waterproof bags.
Add a safari
We can arrange safaris to Tarangire, the Serengeti, the Ngorongoro Crater and more before or after your climb — just allow a day or two to recover.
