Tour overview

10-Day Northern Circuit Kilimanjaro Climb with Crater Camp

Discover Kilimanjaro on a specialist ten-day expedition that combines the scenic western approach, the remote northern wilderness and a conditional night near the summit. From near Londorossi Gate, the Lemosho approach climbs through rainforest to the Shira Plateau, with dramatic volcanic landscapes and views of Kibo. The route then curves around the quiet northern slopes, with rugged ridges and wide views over the plains. The long schedule allows gradual adjustment to altitude — but unlike conventional climbs, this expedition proposes a night at Crater Camp, an exceptionally high campsite that needs extra planning, specialist supervision and strict health and safety controls.

The itinerary follows the Northern Circuit: Mti Mkubwa, Shira I and II, Lava Tower at about 4,600 m with a descent to Moir Hut, then Buffalo Camp, Third Cave and School Hut. Where the nine-day climb attempts the summit and descends the same day, this variation climbs to the crater rim and spends a night at Crater Camp (about 5,730 m). If health and conditions allow, you may see the crater’s volcanic landscape and ice formations before the summit and a descent to Mweka Camp the next day, then through the rainforest to Mweka Gate.

This expedition is only for experienced, medically assessed high-altitude trekkers — not for a first mountain adventure. The longer approach helps, but sleeping at 5,730 m adds serious altitude exposure: even fit, experienced climbers face a substantial risk of severe altitude illness there. It therefore requires a documented safety plan, the right equipment, specialist leadership and the flexibility to abandon the crater night. Throughout, your team makes conservative decisions on altitude, with camp, meals and close health monitoring all the way.

Please note

Crater Camp is at about 5,730 m, where serious altitude illness can develop quickly — sleeping there is far riskier than descending after a normal summit attempt. This is not a standard package: it requires previous high-altitude experience, medical advice, specialist guides, an evacuation plan and park authorization, and the crater night is cancelled if health or conditions make it unsafe. Most climbers should choose the 9-Day Northern Circuit.

Entering the Western Rainforest

Your climb begins with a transfer from Moshi or Arusha to Londorossi Gate on Kilimanjaro’s western side, through villages, farmland and forested slopes. Your guide completes park registration, permit checks and final equipment checks; depending on park arrangements and road conditions, the group may then drive on to the Lemosho trailhead before setting off into the rainforest.

The trail climbs gently through tall trees and moss-hung branches, home to forest birds and, sometimes, monkeys — a comfortable introduction to the mountain. After three to four hours, reach Mti Mkubwa (“Big Tree”) Camp at about 2,650 m, where your crew has pitched the tents. Enjoy a warm dinner and a briefing on tomorrow’s walk to Shira I Camp.

After breakfast the trail leaves the rainforest for heathland and open moorland, with wide views over Kilimanjaro’s western slopes and the plains below. The path climbs steadily over rocky ridges towards the Shira Plateau, and on clear days Kibo Peak grows ever more impressive. Your guide keeps a comfortable pace with regular rests.

After five to seven hours the land opens onto the Shira Plateau. Reach Shira I Camp (about 3,500 m), settle into your tent and enjoy a warm meal. Your guide carries out routine health checks and briefs you on tomorrow’s walk across the plateau to Shira II Camp.

Today crosses the Shira Plateau, an ancient volcanic landscape of open moorland, low alpine plants and volcanic rock, with superb views of Kibo and the mountain’s western and southern slopes. The gradient is gentler than on previous days, leaving time to enjoy the scenery while your guide watches how everyone is adjusting to the altitude.

After three to four hours, reach Shira II Camp (about 3,850 m). The shorter day gives you time to rest before tomorrow’s acclimatization stage to Lava Tower. After a warm meal and health checks, spend the afternoon relaxing, drinking well and enjoying the high-altitude calm of the plateau.

High-Altitude Acclimatization

After breakfast, leave the Shira Plateau and climb into the alpine desert towards Lava Tower, a dramatic volcanic formation at about 4,600 m. The vegetation thins to almost nothing, the ground turns to rock and gravel, and the views of Kibo grow ever more striking. Your guide keeps a slow, steady pace — climbing high by day and sleeping lower is key to acclimatization.

After a rest at Lava Tower, turn north and descend through rugged alpine terrain to Moir Hut camp (about 4,200 m), with fine views over the valleys and Kilimanjaro’s northern landscapes — six to eight hours in all. Settle into your tent for a warm meal, health checks and a briefing on tomorrow’s traverse to Buffalo Camp, the start of the remote northern section.

Into the Northern Wilderness

Today the Northern Circuit begins its traverse of Kilimanjaro’s quiet northern slopes. The trail crosses rugged volcanic ground of rocky ridges and sparse vegetation and — depending on the trail variation and conditions — may climb towards the Lent Hills before continuing east. Some stretches see few other groups, giving the day a peaceful, remote feel.

After five to seven hours, reach Buffalo Camp (about 4,020 m), with wide views of the mountain and, in clear weather, the distant northern plains. Settle in for a warm meal, health checks and a briefing on tomorrow’s walk to Third Cave.

Traversing the Northern Slopes

Continue across the northern slopes on a trail of gentle ups and downs through open alpine valleys, rocky ridges and sparse vegetation — a striking contrast to the rainforest and moorland of the first days. In clear weather, enjoy views of Kibo’s upper slopes and the plains far below.

Reach Third Cave Camp (about 3,870 m) after five to seven hours. Sleeping a little lower than the previous camps is a useful part of the route’s acclimatization profile. After a warm meal and health checks, your guide briefs you on tomorrow’s climb to School Hut, the base for the summit.

Approaching the Upper Mountain

After breakfast, climb from the northern slopes towards School Hut through increasingly barren alpine terrain of volcanic rock and gravel, with impressive views of Kibo’s summit formations. It is colder and more exposed up here, and the weather can change during the day, so your guide keeps a slow, steady pace with regular drinks.

Reach School Hut (about 4,750 m) after four to five hours. After a warm meal, your expedition leader carries out a detailed health assessment and briefs the group on the conditional climb to Crater Camp, the weather outlook and the agreed alternative plan. Rest, drink well and prepare your kit for the coldest, highest days of the expedition.

A Conditional High-Altitude Night

After a specialist health and safety assessment, the expedition may climb from School Hut to the crater rim and the designated Crater Camp area. This day is fundamentally different from any other on Kilimanjaro: you spend prolonged time at extreme altitude and sleep at about 5,730 m, in barren volcanic terrain where cold, strong winds and sudden weather changes are always possible. Every participant’s health comes first, and the team is ready to abandon the crater night and descend if symptoms, weather or conditions require it.

If every requirement is met, the team reaches the permitted Crater Camp for a short, carefully managed night beside the summit crater, with views of its volcanic landscape and remaining ice formations where conditions allow. The camp is exceptionally high and carries a real risk of severe altitude illness, so your team monitors everyone closely and stays ready to start a descent. Any exploration around the crater is conditional — and the crater night may be cancelled even after you reach School Hut, in favour of the agreed descent-based plan.

Summit and Descent

If the crater night has gone safely and conditions remain suitable, your guide assesses everyone before setting out for Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) on the permitted high-altitude trail, with extraordinary views over the crater and ice fields. Timing depends on the weather, your health and the approved plan, and the summit attempt may be shortened or cancelled if your team has any safety concerns — reaching the top never comes before a safe descent.

From your highest safe point, descend on the southern side towards the Barafu area and on through the alpine desert to Mweka Camp (about 3,100 m). It is a demanding day of substantial height loss over rocky ground after a night at extreme altitude, and your guide adjusts the descent to everyone’s condition. As the vegetation returns, reach Mweka for a warm meal and a well-earned rest.

Final Descent Through the Rainforest

After breakfast, descend through the upper forest towards Mweka Gate as open mountain slopes give way to dense rainforest, tall trees and moss-covered branches. The descent is easier on the lungs, but the steady downhill walking can be tiring after summit day, so your guide keeps a comfortable pace with time for rests and photographs.

Reach Mweka Gate after three to four hours, where your guide completes the park exit formalities and eligible climbers receive their summit certificate for the highest official point reached. Thank your mountain crew and transfer back to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha to celebrate the end of your ten-day Northern Circuit expedition with Genet Expeditions.

Important travel information

Who this expedition suits
Only experienced, medically assessed high-altitude climbers. Most travellers should choose the standard nine-day Northern Circuit instead.
Crater Camp safety
Sleeping at about 5,730 m is significantly more hazardous than a conventional summit and descent; severe altitude illness can become life-threatening and may require urgent descent. Before confirming, we establish participant selection and medical advice, previous altitude experience, park permissions, specialist leadership, emergency and evacuation arrangements, an alternative plan without the crater night, and your guide’s clear authority to cancel or shorten the expedition.
Best time
January to early March and June to October are usually drier, but severe cold, wind and changing weather are always possible at the summit. No season guarantees suitable conditions for a crater night.
Where you sleep
Nine proposed nights at designated campsites: Mti Mkubwa, Shira I and II, Moir Hut, Buffalo, Third Cave, School Hut, Crater Camp (conditional) and Mweka.
Essential equipment
Well-fitted waterproof boots; insulated clothing for severe cold; windproof and waterproof layers; a warm summit jacket and thermal gloves; warm headwear, neck and sun protection; a sleeping bag for extreme cold; a reliable headlamp; trekking poles and a daypack; hydration equipment; personal medication; waterproof storage. A specialist checklist follows once arrangements are confirmed.
Add a safari
We can arrange safaris before or after your expedition — allow time to recover from the upper mountain.

Questions

10-Day Northern Circuit Kilimanjaro Climb with Crater Camp FAQs

What makes this expedition different?

It proposes a night at Crater Camp near the summit, instead of the usual summit attempt and descent on the same day.

How high is Crater Camp?

About 5,730 m. Sleeping at this height carries serious altitude-related risks.

Is it suitable for beginners?

No. It is a specialist expedition for experienced, medically assessed climbers only; most travellers should choose the nine-day Northern Circuit.

Does the longer itinerary guarantee better acclimatization?

No. The long approach helps, but sleeping at Crater Camp adds substantial risk and guarantees neither safety nor the summit.

Is the Crater Camp night guaranteed?

No. It depends on park authorization, weather, individual health and your team’s safety assessment, and is cancelled if conditions are unsuitable.

Can I see the crater and glaciers?

The upper mountain offers views of the crater and remaining ice formations where access and conditions allow, always on authorized routes.

What happens if Crater Camp is cancelled?

An alternative plan is agreed before departure — usually a conventional summit and descent, or a descent without a summit attempt.
