A family-run garden lodge on the edge of Moshi, founded in 1988 — a pool among tropical greenery, a spa and the open-air Zingira restaurant, close to the Kilimanjaro gates.
Chanya Lodge is one of the longest-established hotels in the Moshi area. Founded in 1988 and family-run ever since, it sits in Kiboriloni, just off the Arusha–Himo road on the edge of town, in gardens full of tropical greenery. It is about 15 minutes from Moshi town centre and roughly an hour from Kilimanjaro International Airport.
Moshi is the starting point for most Kilimanjaro climbs, and Chanya has long been a favourite with climbers. The night before the climb, it is a calm place to sort your kit, meet your guide for the briefing and get an early night. After the descent, the pool, the spa and a cold drink in the garden are exactly what tired legs need.
The lodge has 32 rooms. Classic doubles suit couples, twins and triples work well for friends and climbing partners, and family quadruple rooms — with a queen bed and two singles — give a family of four space to stay together. The rooms look onto the gardens, and the whole lodge has a relaxed, homely atmosphere that reflects its long family ownership.
At the heart of the lodge are the outdoor swimming pool, surrounded by greenery, and the open-air Zingira restaurant and bar, which serves Tanzanian, Indian and continental dishes. A spa offers massages after your climb, Wi-Fi is free in public areas, and a 24-hour front desk, free parking and luggage storage make it easy to leave bags behind while you are on the mountain or on safari.
The lodge is now also marketed as “Chanya by Ardhi Africa”; we confirm the latest details with the property when we book your stay.

Leave extra bags safely at the lodge while you are on the mountain or on safari.

The open-air Zingira restaurant and bar is the social heart of Chanya. The menu mixes Tanzanian, Indian and continental dishes — a reflection of Moshi’s own mix of cultures — and meals are served in a relaxed garden setting.
Before a climb, a hearty dinner and an early night are the order of the day; after the descent, the bar is where climbers gather to celebrate with their guides and porters. Room service is available during set hours. If you have dietary requirements, tell us when you book and we will let the lodge know in advance; for climbers, we also share your needs with our mountain cooks.
Chanya Lodge is in Kiboriloni, just off the Arusha–Himo road on the eastern edge of Moshi. The town centre is about 15 minutes away, and Kilimanjaro International Airport roughly an hour by road. The lodge’s address is Plot 298, Kiboriloni.
We meet you at the airport and transfer you privately to the lodge. For Kilimanjaro climbers, our team holds the pre-climb briefing at the lodge and collects you on the morning of the climb; the main route gates are about an hour or so away depending on the route.
Chanya is open all year. Moshi is warmer than Arusha, with hot days in January and February and pleasant, cooler weather from June to October.
The main Kilimanjaro climbing seasons — January to early March and June to October — are the busiest times in Moshi, so we recommend booking early. The long rains from March to May bring lush gardens and fewer visitors; the short rains in November usually fall as brief showers. Clear views of Kilimanjaro are most likely early in the morning.
