Tour overview

6-Day Umbwe Route Kilimanjaro Climb

Experience one of Kilimanjaro’s most dramatic southern approaches on this six-day climb for experienced mountain enthusiasts. Umbwe is known for its steep ascent, narrow forested ridges and quiet early trails — a distinctive alternative to the busier Machame, Lemosho and Marangu routes. From Umbwe Gate, the trail climbs through lush rainforest before the scenery changes quickly to heathland, rocky ridges and volcanic landscapes. The steep terrain demands excellent preparation, trekking experience and careful altitude management, with professional guides, crew, camp and fresh meals throughout.

The six-day itinerary is demanding but less compressed than the five-day version, adding a night at Karanga Camp before the final ascent to Barafu. Day one climbs steep rainforest to Umbwe Cave Camp (about 2,850 m); day two follows the dramatic Umbwe Ridge to Barranco Camp beneath the Barranco Wall. You then scramble over the Wall and cross the Karanga Valley to Karanga Camp, giving more time to rest and adjust before Barafu. The summit night climbs to Stella Point and, conditions permitting, Uhuru Peak at 5,895 m, before you descend via Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate.

This climb is best suited to experienced, physically prepared trekkers who understand steep terrain and rapid height gain. The night at Karanga makes it less compressed than the five-day version, but Umbwe remains one of Kilimanjaro’s most demanding approaches, with less gradual acclimatization than longer routes — steep forest trails, rocky ridges, scrambling and a hard summit night. Previous high-altitude experience is strongly recommended; the extra day does not remove the risk of altitude illness or guarantee the summit.

Into Kilimanjaro’s Southern Rainforest

Your climb begins with a transfer from Moshi or Arusha to Umbwe Gate on Kilimanjaro’s southern slopes, through villages and farmland. Your guide completes park registration, permit checks and final equipment checks, then briefs you before you enter the rainforest. From the start, the trail is considerably steeper than most other routes, climbing narrow forest paths that need careful footing.

The path climbs ever more steeply up forested slopes, with rich vegetation and glimpses of the mountain through gaps in the canopy. Your guide keeps a controlled pace with regular drinks and rests. After five to seven hours, reach Umbwe Cave Camp (about 2,850 m), where your crew has pitched the tents. Rest after a demanding first day, enjoy a warm meal and join your guide for health checks.

Along the Dramatic Umbwe Ridge

After breakfast, climb the dramatic Umbwe Ridge as the forest gives way to heathland and moorland. The trail is steep, with rocky ground and exposed ridges, and the views of Kilimanjaro’s southern slopes open up quickly. Because you gain height so rapidly, your guide keeps a slow pace and watches closely for any signs of altitude illness.

After five to seven hours, reach the Barranco Valley, with its giant groundsels and views of the southern glaciers, and Barranco Camp (about 3,960 m) beneath the Barranco Wall. After a warm meal and health checks, your guide briefs you on tomorrow’s route over the Wall to Karanga Camp.

Barranco Wall and Karanga Valley

After an early breakfast, tackle the famous Barranco Wall, a steep rocky face rising above camp. No technical equipment is normally needed, but some sections are steep and exposed and call for careful scrambling, balance and concentration; your guide leads the way and sets the rhythm. From the top, enjoy sweeping views of the valleys, the camp below and Kilimanjaro’s southern glaciers.

The trail then crosses ridges and the beautiful Karanga Valley to Karanga Camp (about 4,035 m), four to five hours in all, with remarkable views of the southern glaciers. This extra stop is the main advantage of the six-day Umbwe over the five-day version, giving you more time to rest before Barafu. Relax and drink well through the afternoon while your guide carries out health checks.

Into the Alpine Desert

After breakfast, climb from Karanga towards Barafu Camp through ever more barren terrain of volcanic rock and gravel, as the last vegetation gives way to Kilimanjaro’s alpine desert. In clear weather the southern glaciers and Kibo’s rugged formations look magnificent. The distance is short, but the altitude and rocky ground make this an important stage, so your guide keeps a slow, steady pace.

Reach Barafu Camp (about 4,670 m) after four to five hours. After a warm meal, your guide carries out a detailed health assessment and briefs you on the night’s departure, weather and safety. Organize your summit kit — warm layers, headlamp and water — and rest as much as you can; the summit attempt goes ahead only if your guide judges the conditions and each climber’s health suitable.

Summit Attempt and Descent to Mweka

Your summit attempt usually starts around midnight after a short rest at Barafu Camp. After a light snack, climb steeply by headlamp through loose volcanic scree — cold, dark and at extreme altitude, this is the hardest stage of the climb. Your guide sets a slow, controlled pace and checks each climber regularly. The first goal is Stella Point on the crater rim (about 5,756 m). If the weather, the trail and your health allow, continue along the rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m), the highest point in Africa, with views over the crater and the remaining ice fields. Reaching the summit is never guaranteed, and your guide’s safety decisions always come first.

From your highest safe point, descend carefully to Barafu Camp for a rest and a meal, then continue down through the alpine desert to Mweka Camp (about 3,100 m) as the air thickens and the vegetation returns. With the ascent and descent combined, this is an exceptionally long day of twelve to sixteen hours or more. Arrive for a warm dinner and a well-earned night’s rest after one of the most memorable days of your life.

Final Descent Through the Rainforest

After breakfast, descend through the upper forest towards Mweka Gate as open mountain slopes give way to dense rainforest, tall trees and moss-covered branches. The descent is easier on the lungs, but the steady downhill walking can be tiring after summit day, so your guide keeps a comfortable pace with time for rests and photographs.

Reach Mweka Gate after three to four hours, where your guide completes the park exit formalities and eligible climbers receive their summit certificate for the highest official point reached. Thank your mountain crew and transfer back to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha to celebrate the end of your six-day Umbwe Route climb with Genet Expeditions.

Important travel information

Who this climb suits
Experienced, physically prepared trekkers who understand steep terrain and rapid height gain. Not a beginner route — for first-time climbers we recommend longer, more gradual itineraries.
Altitude & safety
Umbwe gains height quickly and allows less acclimatization than longer routes; the night at Karanga makes it less compressed than the five-day version, but the climb remains demanding. The steep trail can be especially difficult in wet conditions. Your guide checks everyone regularly for headache, nausea, dizziness, unusual tiredness and breathlessness; worsening symptoms mean descent, not a summit. Speak to a doctor before booking if you have medical concerns, and carry insurance that covers high-altitude trekking and evacuation.
Best time to climb
January to early March and June to October are usually drier. April–May and parts of November bring more rain, muddy trails and less visibility. Mountain weather is unpredictable all year — prepare for rain, wind and freezing summit temperatures.
Where you sleep
Five nights at designated campsites — Umbwe Cave, Barranco, Karanga, Barafu and Mweka — with tents and meals set up by your crew.
What to pack
Broken-in waterproof boots; base and insulating layers; a waterproof, windproof jacket and trousers; a warm summit jacket; gloves, hat and neck warmer; sun hat, sunglasses and high-SPF sunscreen; a daypack and water bottles; a cold-rated sleeping bag; a headlamp with spare batteries; trekking poles; toiletries, medication and a small first-aid kit; snacks; waterproof bags.
Add a safari
We can arrange safaris to Tarangire, the Serengeti, the Ngorongoro Crater and more before or after your climb — just allow a day or two to recover.
