The story of Zanzibar in a single day — the coral-stone lanes of a UNESCO World Heritage town and the fragrant spice farms that made the island famous.
Stone Town, the historic heart of Zanzibar City, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the finest old Swahili trading towns in East Africa. Its narrow lanes of coral-stone houses, carved wooden doors, mosques, churches and bustling markets reflect centuries of African, Arab, Persian, Indian and European influence. With a local guide, you explore the Old Fort and the Forodhani waterfront, the House of Wonders area, the Darajani market with its spices, fish and fruit, and the moving memorial and museum on the site of the former slave market at Christ Church Cathedral.
After lunch, you drive into the countryside to a working spice farm, where Zanzibar earned its name as the Spice Island. Your farm guide shows you cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon, black pepper, vanilla, cardamom, lemongrass and turmeric growing in their natural form, inviting you to smell, touch and taste as you go, along with seasonal tropical fruits such as jackfruit, rambutan and mangosteen. The visit often ends with a fruit tasting, a demonstration of coconut-tree climbing and, if you wish, a simple Swahili lunch cooked with the spices you have just seen.
The day is easy-paced and ideal early in your stay, giving you the background to understand the island. It can also be split into two half days. Stone Town has a conservative dress code, and Friday prayers and Ramadan can change opening hours, which your guide plans around.
