Jozani Forest & Nature Experiences

Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park, in the centre-south of Zanzibar, protects the island’s largest remaining area of indigenous forest, along with mangroves, salt marsh and coastal thicket. It is the only national park on Zanzibar, and the best place to see the Zanzibar red colobus — a striking monkey with a red back, pale face and wild white tufts of hair, found nowhere else on Earth and listed as endangered.

With a park guide, you walk the forest trails among tall trees, palms and ferns, where Sykes’ monkeys, bushbabies, many birds and butterflies also live. The red colobus families are often found feeding in the trees near the forest edge and on neighbouring farmland, where they are relaxed around people, giving wonderful photographic opportunities from a respectful distance. The visit continues on the mangrove boardwalk, a wooden walkway above the tidal swamp, where your guide explains the role of mangroves in protecting the coast and as nurseries for fish and crabs.

The tour is easy and short, and fits well on the way to or from the south and east-coast beaches, or combined with dolphin watching at Kizimkazi or a Safari Blue day. Park entry and guiding fees are included and support conservation.

Questions

Jozani Forest & Nature Experiences FAQs

Will we definitely see red colobus monkeys?

Sightings are very likely, as several family groups live near the park entrance, but they are wild animals.

Can children visit Jozani?

Yes — the walk is short and easy.

Can we combine Jozani with other trips?

Yes — it fits well with dolphin watching at Kizimkazi, Safari Blue or a day on the south-east coast.

Why are the monkeys endangered?

They live only on Zanzibar and have lost much of their forest habitat; protecting Jozani is key to their survival.
