Tukaone is a family-owned tented camp in the Hembe Hills of the central Serengeti, north-west of Seronera. The Seronera valley, about 40 minutes’ drive away, is one of the best places in Africa to see big cats: its rivers and kopjes support resident lions, leopards and cheetahs throughout the year, so game drives from Tukaone are rewarding in every season.
The camp has fifteen spacious tents made of heavy canvas, raised on timber platforms, each with a private veranda looking out over the savanna. Tents come in single, twin, double and triple layouts and have en-suite bathrooms with solar-heated showers and mosquito nets. They are comfortable and well kept rather than showy — the focus is on the Serengeti outside.
The main area has a dining tent, a bar and lounge, a small library with books and board games, and a gift shop. In the evening, guests gather around the campfire to share the day’s sightings under a sky full of stars. Wildlife such as wildebeest and zebra often passes close to camp, and at night the sounds of the bush are all around.
Power is solar, with a charging station in the main area, and Wi-Fi is available in the main tent. Because the camp is unfenced, guests are escorted after dark.
With its family atmosphere, triple tents, kids’ meals and fair prices, Tukaone is a smart choice for families and for travellers who want a genuine tented experience in a prime location without paying luxury rates.
