Walk with some of the last hunter-gatherers in Africa at sunrise, then watch Datoga smiths forge arrowheads by hand.
Lake Eyasi is a seasonal soda lake at the foot of the Rift Valley escarpment, south-west of Karatu and the Ngorongoro highlands. Its dry bush, rocky hills and palm-fringed shores are home to two very different peoples: the Hadzabe, one of the last hunter-gatherer communities in Africa, who speak a click language and live from the land much as their ancestors did; and the Datoga, pastoralists and skilled metalworkers known for their ironwork and brass jewellery.
The day begins very early. Guided by a local Iraqw or Hadza interpreter, you join Hadzabe men on a hunting walk through the bush at dawn, following them as they track birds and small animals with handmade bows and arrows, and learn to make fire with sticks. Back at camp, the women may share how they gather roots, berries and baobab fruit. Later in the morning you visit a Datoga homestead to watch blacksmiths melt scrap metal over a charcoal fire and shape it into arrowheads and jewellery, often later traded with the Hadzabe.
The experience is raw and real, not a performance — the hunting walk can be fast and thorny, and nothing is staged for visitors. We work with local guides who keep visits small and respectful, and fees support the communities. Because of the early start, the trip works best from a lodge in Karatu or at Lake Eyasi itself, ideally as part of a safari with Ngorongoro.
