Drive down the walls of an ancient volcano into a wildlife-filled world — one of Africa’s most extraordinary safari days.
The Ngorongoro Crater is the largest unbroken, unflooded volcanic caldera in the world, about 20 km across with walls rising some 600 m from its floor. Inside, grassland, swamps, a soda lake and patches of forest support a remarkable concentration of wildlife, and the crater is part of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where Maasai communities still live alongside the animals.
After the drive from Arusha (about three hours) or a short drive from Karatu, you pass through the highland forest to the crater rim for your first view across the caldera. You then descend into the crater for a game drive of around five to six hours. Lions, spotted hyenas, buffaloes, zebras, wildebeests and elephants are common, and Lake Magadi often hosts flamingos. The crater is one of the best places in Tanzania to see the endangered black rhino, though sightings are never guaranteed. Lunch is taken at a picnic site such as the hippo pool at Ngoitoktok.
From Arusha this is a long day, with around six hours of driving in total, so we start very early. For a more relaxed visit, we recommend staying in Karatu the night before, or combining the crater with Tarangire or Lake Manyara on a short safari. A per-vehicle crater service fee and per-person conservation fees apply and are included in your price.
