Discover the island’s hidden side — clear cave pools, coral caverns and the haunting history of the Mangapwani slave chamber.
Zanzibar’s ancient coral-rag limestone is riddled with caves, sinkholes and underground pools, many of them sacred to local communities. This experience takes you beyond the beaches to discover them, choosing a route that fits where you are staying: the Kuza cave on the south-east coast, the caves of Mangapwani on the north-west coast, or both on a full day.
Near Jambiani, the Kuza cave is a natural limestone cave with a crystal-clear, fresh-to-brackish pool, lit by shafts of daylight through the roof. After a short walk and steps down, you can swim in the cool water, learn about the cave’s traditional significance and, on many visits, enjoy Swahili drumming and stories. In the north-west, Mangapwani has two very different sites: a large natural coral cave with a freshwater pool, once used by the community as a water source, and a man-made slave chamber dug into the coral rock, used to hide enslaved people after the slave trade was officially banned in 1873. Your guide shares the history of both with care.
The day can be completed with time at a coastal village, the seagrass lagoons of Jambiani or Paje, or the nearby beaches. Paths to the caves include uneven steps and low ceilings in places, and swimming is optional.
